Of Western Dragons

by Paul D. Anderson

The term Western Dragon includes many species, sub-species, and breeds. Wizards who specialize in biological transfiguration, hereafter referred to as Biomancers, greatly play into the recent (within the last 100 years) proliferation of Western Dragon types. In general terms, a Western Dragon flies with the aid of two wings and has four legs. Most only have one head, yet the minority with multiple heads become the most notorious and memorable causing the population of victimized people to believe they are the majority. Some have the capacity of speech. Out of those who speak, a few become wizards.

Many Dragonologists report Western Dragons as being evil, however that sweeping generality is not true. Obviously the bad apples ruin the whole batch by being more notorious and memorable. Please recall the account depicted in “Dragonheart”. In either case, when you come upon a Western Dragon get to a safe place, but get a photo if possible, first. Then, use my flow chart and these descriptions to estimate your chances of survival.

Fire Drake:

When you hear “Fire Drake” think Smaug from Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”. The Fire Drake coloration includes dark greens, browns, and reds. They also have two wings, four legs, and have one head. They do like hording treasure and have a disposition for destruction and eating people. Yet, that being said, there are the exceptions listed above.

Despite the name Fire Drake they are cold blooded organisms who shoot fire from their mouths. The explanation for this is they have Hydrogen Bladder Organs located close to the spine. The hydrogen is produced by a symbiotic relationship with Hydrogenobacter thermophilus a bacteria found in hot springs that needs an environment with low oxygen and high carbon dioxide. Another organ attached to the lungs houses the Hydrogenobacter thermophilus. Even though the bacteria feeds off of the nutrient rich walls of the housing organ, the Fire Drake produces the nutrient coating quickly and can consciously add oxygen by opening connecting tubes in the lungs to the housing organ to kill off or reduce the bacteria before hybernation. These tubes also allow the bacteria to get there in the first place when the Fire Drake breaths in the bacteria filled hot springs water. Due to the explosive nature of hydrogen (as demonstrated by the dirigible Hindenburg), the hydrogen bladders and Hydrogenobacter thermophilus housing organs are reinforced yet flexible.

Drake:

The word Drake means different things to different dragonologists. In “The Element Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures” by John & Caitlin Matthews, a Drake is described as a Draconian (a large humanoid type Dragon). For my purposes Drake refers to a wingless version of the Fire Drake, being a sub-species. Drakes were created by Biomancers for the main purpose of guarding the Biomancer’s strong hold, as depicted in the movie “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad”. Of course word got out and various kings and such wanted their own Drake guardians creating a breeding program and Drake commerce. Eventually, through thefts and other mishaps, control over Drakes waned and wild versions appeared.

Breeds of Fire Drakes:

Chronicled in the books and movies of “Harry Potter” by J.K. Rowling. In general, these dragons are “leave me alone and I might only eat your livestock” type dragons.

Welsh Green                     Peruvian Vipertooth          Antipodean Opaleye

Romanian Longhorn     Hedridean Black                 Swedish Short-Snout

Hungarian Horntail       Ukrainian Ironbelly

Please find the specifics of these dragons in the Harry Potter Wikia

Norbert in the movie “the Sorcerer’s Stone” is a Norwegian Ridgeback and not a Fire Drake but a Wyvern.

Chromatic Dragons (Red, White, Black, Blue, Green, Brown, Gray, & Purple):

Chronicled in the Dungeons & Dragons RPG. These represent the worst of the worst.

                        Red Dragon:

A breed of Fire Drake that aspires to power and wealth and will do what it takes to get there.

                        White Dragon (Frost Dragon):

These dragons are a distinct species from other Western Dragons and Fire Drakes. Modern Biomancers within the last 100 years created a masterwork in White Dragons. The White or Frost Dragon is a cold blooded Western Dragon and correspondingly has two wings, four legs, and one head. Almost all of the White Dragons maintain a malicious arrogance. They will not hesitate to eat you. You might be able to distract them with very shiny sparkly precious items. I will make one distinction between White Dragons and Albino Fire Drakes in that a White Dragon’s inner mouth is blueish and the Albino Fire Drake’s mouth is blackish. Not that it matters much as most people die before finding that information out. Instead of spewing fire they shoot a frosty stream of liquid Nitrogen at their enemies.

Now, you should be thinking So if the White Dragon is cold blooded and lives in cold places how does it survive? and So where does this liquid Nitrogen come from? The answer oddly enough is Symbiotic Cyanobacteria. One interesting feature of the White Dragon is its ability to flex its scales out in much the same way as a bird might fluff its feathers. This allows the sun light to bounce between the white scales reaching the blue-green skin underneath, much the same way Polar Bears have white fur and black skin for getting their warmth.   Just beneath the skin of the White Dragon lies Cyanobacteria filled organelles providing the skin under the dragon’s white scales its blue-green hue.

This particular Cyanobacteria in White Dragons generates Ammonia and Oxygen. These two components go to separate chambers and tubes to come to another reinforced chamber where they come together and explode creating Nitrogen and Water. The explosions provide the White Dragon with heat and the collected Nitrogen with enough pressure to liquify it and then shoot it at their enemies.

                        Black Dragon (Swamp Dragon):

Another modern Biomancer special creation. These dragons are a distinct species from other Western Dragons and Fire Drakes having two wings, four legs, and one head. They are also cold blooded. The Black Dragon shoots acid from its mouth. This acid is a terrible combination of concentrated Sulphonic Acid, concentrated Formic Acid (the sting in ant bites and bee stings), and liquefied Body Fats. The Body Fats help the concentrated acid to stick to the victim. A few Black Dragon breeds have developed tail stings again with Formic Acid as their main component. Black Dragons enjoy causing massive pain with eyes being a favorite target. In the heat of battle, a Black Dragon may also excrete Nitric Acid from its skin. This acid is naturally produced in the skin through exposure to sunlight and Black Dragons absorb a lot of sunlight.

                        Blue Dragon (Storm Dragon):

These dragons are a distinct species from other Western Dragons and Fire Drakes having two wings, four legs, and one head. They are also cold blooded. The Blue Dragon shoots lightning from its mouth. Some of these dragons take humanoid slaves. The lightning generated comes from organs similar yet greater in scale to the ones in Electric Eels yet their structure and delivery of electricity aligns more with that of Mongolian Deathworms. A stream of electrolytes shoots at the victim while a split second later the electric charge follows the same path.

                        Green Dragon:

These dragons are a distinct species from other Western Dragons and Fire Drakes having two wings, four legs, and one head. They are also cold blooded. The Green Dragon shoots Chlorine Gas from its mouth. While creating the electrical discharge for the Blue Dragon the Biomancers discovered that when an electrical charge passes through a salt water solution Chlorine Gas and Caustic Soda were produced (2 NaCl (or KCl) + 2 H2O → Cl2 + H2 + 2 NaOH (or KOH)). Therefore, a sub group of Biomancers set about enabling the Green Dragon to mass produce Chlorine Gas with help of their own electrical organs.  They eliminate the Caustic Soda in their excrement.

                        Gray Dragon:

These dragons are a distinct species from other Western Dragons and Fire Drakes having two wings, four legs, and one head. They are also cold blooded. The Gray Dragon shoots Caustic Ooze from its mouth. Therefore, a sub group of Biomancers set about enabling the Gray Dragon to mass produce Caustic Soda with help of their own electrical organs. The Chlorine Gas is not concentrated and released through the Gray Dragon’s skin.

                        Brown Dragon:

These dragons are a distinct species from other Western Dragons and Fire Drakes having two wings, four legs, and one head. They are also cold blooded. The Brown Dragon shoots Sand from its mouth. These dragons have an extra set of lungs connected to a sand chamber. Quite simply they suck in the sand to expel it later.

                        Purple Dragon:

These dragons are a distinct species from other Western Dragons and Fire Drakes having two wings, four legs, and one head. They are also cold blooded. The Purple Dragon shoots Psychotropic Vapor from its mouth. This comes from poison glands along the same lines as Hallucinogenic Toads. The poison is concentrated and then expelled as a vapor

Metallic Dragons:

Chronicled in the Dungeons & Dragons RPG. These represent the nicer dragons. In most cases these Metalic Dragons shoot fire and are breeds of Fire Drakes; they also employ strong magic and speak. Being in general “good” dragons they avoid fights where possible and use their fire as a last resort.

Adamantine Dragons           Brass Dragons                      Bronze Dragons

Cobalt Dragons                     Copper Dragons                   Gold Dragons

Iron Dragons                        Mercury Dragons                 Mithral Dragons

Orium Dragons                    Silver Dragons                       Steel Dragons

Gem Dragons:

These show up in various books and represent dragons of a variety of personalities. They are breeds of Fire Drake. The most subtle difference between these and Chromatic Dragons lies in their luster. Chromatic Dragons have a dull matt like luster while the Gem Dragons are high gloss and shiny. Gem Dragons form a strong mental bond with one humanoid rider and take on enemies as a team. They communicate with their rider through mental pictures, telepathy, and verbal speech. The disposition and goals of the Gem Dragon tend to match those of the rider.

                        Ruby                                       Emerald                                 Sapphire

                        Obsidian                                Amethyst                               Diamond

                        Topaz                                     Opal                                        Aquamarine

Zmaj:

These Fire Drakes, found in and around Russia have multiple heads, three being most common. The appearance of multiple heads comes about through genetic mishap between regular Fire Drakes. Then multi-headed Fire Drakes got together to propagate the deficiency. These Zmaj are mentally unstable and highly dangerous. The few high functioning Zmaj heads tend toward Narcissism and believe they are superior to any other living organism. Zmaj with more than one high functioning head tend to argue with each other. Luckily for us Zmaj thus afflicted have short (well short for dragons) life spans averaging 350 years.

In rare cases the Zmaj population is sustainable. These Zmaj males have multiple Females stashed separately throughout their territory. These females are reported as being more Hydra like without wings.

Please note that this is in no way an exhaustive list of Western Dragon types!
